Contractor Scam Warning Signs

Every state requires that contractors be licensed before they can work on your home, but this doesn’t stop the unlicensed “Handyman” or “Journeyman” from advertising or working on a project. Unlicensed contractors are not bonded or insured and therefore can often under bid the licensed contractor, since they do not have to pay for insurance, bond and licensing fees. Sure, their prices are likely lower, but that’s because you’re accepting a pretty high risk when you hire them.

Sure, maybe they know what they’re doing, but, then again, maybe not. If they build an inferior deck, short circuit your electrical wiring or cause any type of damage to your home, you have very few legal remedies outside of civil court (where you may find out that your handyman doesn’t even have enough money to pay for the damage he caused). What’s worse, if an unlicensed contractor injures himself while working on your home, he can actually sue YOU for damages!

Protect yourself, your home and your finances by following these tips for contractor scams.

It’s important to take the time to find the right person to do the job properly. Do extra research if something doesn’t feel right. Be aware, and you’ll avoid scams and the contractors who get jobs only when people are desperate.
