Kitchen Gadgets: Over the Sink Strainer

Over the sink cutting board

I am always looking at ways to simplify tasks. I like this idea due to it simplifying the cleanup. I don’t have water or other liquids running off the cutting board onto the counter. I just sweep the waste into the garbage disposal. The colander is right there to sweep items that are washed right into the strainer to drain. If I chop things that need to go into bowls or containers, I can put the container below the board and push the items right in it. I don’t have to lift up the cutting board or pick up the chopped items with my hands.
There are several types of cutting boards out there. There are the polypropylene types. There is a large model which is approx 22″x12″ and a smaller version of approx 11″x20″.

•Silicone strainer snaps in and expands accordion-style for draining and straining; also removes for stand-alone use.
•Cutting board is made of nonporous polypropylene, which provides a tough cutting surface that will not dull knives.
•Nonslip gripper ends keep board securely in place.
•Board fits easily into dishwasher for easy cleaning; strainer is also dishwasher safe.

There is also wood varieties, which some people prefer. They come with both a stainless steel wire strainer and a collapsible silicone strainer.

I have provided some helpful links to Amazon for the items mentioned above.

Ways to Configure Your Cabinets for Comfort

Here are a few details to think about when it comes to ergonomics. How you configure your cabinetry can make your kitchen a comfortable and efficient workspace for you and your family.

Minimize uppers – Wall cabinets can be a stretch for many to access — or altogether out of reach for some — so consider removing wall cabinets and putting in a bank of windows instead. This is an especially smart move if doing this will give you a nice view.

Go for open shelves- Open shelves can make is very easy to access items.

Open Shelves

Install drawers- It’s much more efficient to just pull the drawer out and have all the contents on view right in front of you than having to open two doors and root around for what you need. Pictured below is an handy organizer kit you can add to your drawers.

Deep Drawer

If you can’t avoid corners, make the use best of the space- There is a lot of available options available.

Lazy Susan

Soft-close door hinges and drawer glides are more must-haves – They allow you to shut doors and drawers with one efficient push and no slamming.

Vary countertop heights – While the standard kitchen countertop height is 36 inches, there are many tasks that are more comfortably performed on a lower or higher surface. This is especially true for those who are taller or shorter than average.

How to Set Up a Kitchen Work Triangle

Efficiently designing the path connecting your sink, range and refrigerator can save time and energy in the kitchen

1. The kitchen work triangle connects the three main work areas in the kitchen — the sink, the range, and the refrigerator. As a general guideline, the distance between these areas should be no less than 4 feet and no larger than 9 feet. The sum of all three sides of the triangle should be between 13 feet and 26 feet. If the distance is too small, it can make a kitchen feel cramped and blocked. If it’s too large, it makes cooking a hassle.

2. Think about how well you get around in your current kitchen.
What frustrates you in your kitchen? What causes problems while you’re working?  Thinking about what bothers you the most will help you figure out how to organize your kitchen workspaces within the triangle format. Keep in mind that the lengths of the triangle don’t have to be completely even.

3. Take additional functions into account when determining your work triangle.
Because so many modern kitchens have become multipurpose rooms, it’s important to really think about what functions you want your kitchen to serve. Determining whether you want a desk, homework place, bar, large island, multiple sinks and so on can help you figure out exactly how to position your work triangle.  The shape of your triangle will differ depending on what kind of kitchen shape you have.

4. Make adjustments and design decisions that fit your kitchen best — there are no set rules.
Above all else, you want your kitchen to work for you. While the kitchen work triangle is a great guide, by no means is it set in stone. You may have to design a kitchen with everything on a single wall — in which case the work triangle would be impossible to set up.
