Get the scoop on kitchen and bathroom cabinet materials and construction methods to understand your options.

With all the options available, choosing cabinets for your kitchen or bath can be an overwhelming experience. Aesthetics aside, there are lots of factors that might not be readily apparent that will impact the cabinet’s performance and price. Understanding those factors will give you an advantage in making your selection.

There are three basic structural components to a cabinet: the box, the shelves and the drawers. Each can be constructed in a number of ways. Cabinets generally come four ways: boxed and ready to install in standard dimensions, boxed and ready to assemble, semicustom and custom.

Cabinet prices are wide ranging and directly correlate to materials and construction methods.

Things to Do Before the Renovation Begins

Home remodeling projects can be extremely disruptive to daily life. But a little smart planning ahead of time can make things run more smoothly.

Here’s a few tips:

1. Pare down and pack up: Go through the room(s) that will be part of the remodel and pare back to the essentials. When you must go without your kitchen, it makes no sense to have to dig through mountains of stuff just to find your coffee mug and cereal bowl. Keep the things you will still be able to use in an accessible location and pack up the rest in boxes. If possible, move the boxes to a storage area that’s out of the main flow of traffic through the house — it’s going to feel crowded enough as it is with the workers and all of their gear.

2. Put rolling storage units to work: For the things you do want to access during the remodel, consider filling up a few storage carts on casters. This type of cart is lightweight and easy to move, and stores things in plain view so you can quickly find what you need.

3. Protect your privacy: Move your private items, do whatever you need to do now before the work begins

4. Get your most important stuff together.Once work begins it can suddenly seem impossible to find anything. Get your stuff together now and put it all in one place — somewhere well out of the remodeling zone

5. Don’t forget danger zones This is especially true with children and pets

When to Pick Fixtures and Finishes

Contemporary Shaker Kitchen 1

The huge number of options can be distracting, and it can be overwhelming for most homeowners to make all these decisions at once. Here is a general time line for choosing items during your kitchen’s design.

Here’s a few tips:

1. Appliances, Sinks and Lighting: This is so the plans can reflect the proper sizes, which will in turn affect the cabinetry layout.

2. Flooring & Paint colors: Flooring needs to be picked prior to cabinets. Floor coloring and wall colors tends to occupy a large portion of the room, this can affect your color choice for the cabinets.

3. Cabinets, Countertops and Tile: To start work on an overall palette of materials. Layer the materials and create collages of patterns, textures and colors to see what works best together.

Steps to Surviving a Remodel

Knotty Alder Custom Kitchen

Living through a kitchen remodel isn’t always fun, but these steps will help you work around a kitchen in disarray.

Here’s a few tips:

1. Designate a kitchen stand-in: Eating out all the time gets tiresome, not to mention the strain it can put on your budget.

2. Winnow down your kitchen gear: During a remodel, your cooking and eating routine will be disrupted, and no matter how much you love to cook, ambitious meals will be a challenge.

3. Plan meals around small appliances: Move your fridge to your temporary kitchen, if possible.

4. Stock the pantry with disposables

5. If the weather cooperates, put your grill to work

6. Keep a stash of nonperishable snacks

7. Remember the big picture

Contractor Scam Warning Signs

Every state requires that contractors be licensed before they can work on your home, but this doesn’t stop the unlicensed “Handyman” or “Journeyman” from advertising or working on a project. Unlicensed contractors are not bonded or insured and therefore can often under bid the licensed contractor, since they do not have to pay for insurance, bond and licensing fees. Sure, their prices are likely lower, but that’s because you’re accepting a pretty high risk when you hire them.

Sure, maybe they know what they’re doing, but, then again, maybe not. If they build an inferior deck, short circuit your electrical wiring or cause any type of damage to your home, you have very few legal remedies outside of civil court (where you may find out that your handyman doesn’t even have enough money to pay for the damage he caused). What’s worse, if an unlicensed contractor injures himself while working on your home, he can actually sue YOU for damages!

Protect yourself, your home and your finances by following these tips for contractor scams.

It’s important to take the time to find the right person to do the job properly. Do extra research if something doesn’t feel right. Be aware, and you’ll avoid scams and the contractors who get jobs only when people are desperate.

1. Lack of Licensing
2. Extremely low bids
3. Requiring a large deposit
4. No permanent place of business
5. No Contract
6. No insurance
7. Inadequate references
8. Special deals
9. Cash payments required in advance
10. Mechanic’s liens
